Dr. K. Billen Says:
It works, but it needs _very_ careful set-up in my experience,
Given the generous amount of antennae within the e4200, I bought this expecting a significant improvement in 5.0GHz network coverage around my home and in my garden, compared to my Apple Airport Extreme (also a simultaneous dual-band router).
After experimenting a lot with physical location, orientation, network settings and so on, it seems to offer no/little improvement (have checked this with three different computers in several different locations). Its settings are more flexible than the Airport Extreme, which is nice, but in the real world this does not offer much (if anything).
Also, to confirm what one review (elsewhere) has said (but which others have stated incorrectly), it is not readily wall-mountable, though with a spot of velcro I have managed this. Yes, the e4200 is actually light enough to stay up and in position with velcro on the ceiling! Not what Linksys intended, I am sure, but is nonetheless an advantage over the heavier Apple Airport Extreme.
Therefore, my conclusion is that this is a perfectly good simultaneous dual-band router for someone looking for their first such device, though there are cheaper models in the Linksys range that accomplish the same thing.
For those already using a simultaneous dual-band router, it offers no/little noticeable improvement….not to me, anyway. My advice: save your money.
** UPDATE on APRIL 16 ** After a considerable amount of further experimentation with orientation, location and height above the ground (more than is sensible or practical for most people), I am now achieving what could be termed ‘maximum performance’. My connection is about 30% faster than the Airport Extreme allowed. Have increased my rating by a star. My advice now: yes it is a very fast router but I suspect that most people will not see the benefit from it. It does reward the user with state-of-the-art performance if they’re prepared to put a lot of time into experimenting with physical set-up.

The king of home cable routers? Perhaps….,
A very stylish bit of hardware, no ugly antennas poking out, no multitude of UFO-style flashing lights that other router seem to have in abundance, it just sits there and does it’s stuff.
Set was very easy. The included CD wanted me to plug in an Ethernet cable, but I had already plugged the router in and couldn’t be bothered dragging the laptop over to it, so I skipped that and used the wireless setup. This works very well with Windows 7, which detects it and prompts for the 8 digit PIN number from the base of the router. That’s it!
I then logged in via the web interface and tweaked a couple of settings for my particular home network. At this point you can also run the setup CD to set the advanced settings.
Performance is great, I had no problems running this with my Ethernet connected PS3 (all the ports on the router a Gigabit, the same as the PS3) and my wireless PC’s which all gave very decent wireless N connections. I ran in mixed mode, which can be troublesome on some cheaper devices, here it worked very well, my older wireless devices (a Sony wireless photoframe) connected happily with WPA on a G connection, whilst everything else was WPA2 on wireless N.
The USB port can host either a flashdrive or a USB HDD, you can put all your media on it, and the router will share the media via the built in UPnP/DLNA server (Twonkymedia 6.0.23), this worked very well indeed for me, streaming music, movies and pictures without fuss to my PS3 and Noxon wireless streaming units around the home. The contents of the USB drive are also shared via FTP and SMB (Windows Filesharing), so you can easily copy more media there directly across the network.
My only slight quibble is that the USB port does not support wireless printing, limiting this routers potential somewhat.
Parental control is present but rather basic, port forwarding is pretty easy to setup, UPnP port sharing implementation works well, the firewall has basic settings to prevent Cookies, ActiveX, Java and Proxy content.
If you are looking for perhaps the king of home cable modem/wireless routers, then this surely has to be a contender, it’s a little bit on the expensive side, but worth paying the extra for.

Magnificent Device,
An absolutely superb piece of kit by Linksys/Cisco. I arrived at this router from an an Apple Airport Extreme – a very capable product but one which has frustrating limitations if (like me) you have a windows pc and iPad. Sharing files mounted from a USB attached hard drive on the Apple was difficult and as for direct media streaming – forget it.
Enter the Linksys, web management (so now I can manage my router even from the iPad unlike Apple’s GUI) and somewhat better coverage around my property. Attaching a hard drive though was what impressed me most – the e4200 streamed mp4 video to my iPad with ease. I now have my DVD box sets ripped to this hard drive and have my own private video on demand service operating across wifi … brilliant!!!
As for the hardware it’s very modern looking so doesn’t look out of place in my AV cabinet. A single operating light let’s you know everything is ok. I must admit to previously owning a Linksys WRT54G so didn’t have any problems setting the E4200 up, but in all honesty it’s a piece of cake with the CD included. Personally I just bypassed the CD and went straight to the web management interface. Its that easy.
Granular control, super fast, runs cool and has features to die for.
A highly recommended device.
