Having changed recently from satellite broadband to Vodafone ADSL to reduce costs I could no longer use my Linksys Wireless-G as it wasn’t an ADSL router. Setting it up with the rather poor ZyXel router that came free from Vodafone left me extremely deflated, and not a little annoyed. The Internet radio in the kitchen received no signal at all and reception in general was patchy at best anywhere except the room with the router. Figuring the router was the problem, and having previously good experience with Linksys I looked at all the models on the market at the moment. This one seemed the best option for the price range I was looking at. Installation was simple on my Mac and the broadcast range was boosted immediately. I can now use my computer in any room of the house and the Internet radio works great. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Excellent product.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What’s this?)

I promised that I would review my rating after the router had bedded in and I have to say … to date, I have now had just over a year of faultless use. (including a house move)

Not 5 starts due to the major setup problems, but the work around does work.

    N

I really wanted to love this new Router … my old Belkin, though reasonably reliable was getting a bit long in the tooth and dropped service every so often.

As the postie delivered my new Linksys WAG120N at 7 this morning I thought I would get it unpacked and installed before breakfast … well breakfast came and went, as did lunch and I have just now got everything sorted.

The 2 stars are a reflection of the real pain I went through during install … and maybe if all had gone well (apart from a few minor niggles it might have been given 4)

The process of install was pretty straight forward, following the usual thou shalt not plug in until software is installed message … and Linksys did put a little warning strip across the ethernet sockets on the back.

The problem I had was when I got to the end of the install process I had an error message 321 … Ethernet cable not installed correctly. After checking the cable was properly pushed in, I tried again … same message. I had a couple of spare ethernet cables so tried one of those … same failure … et al … I even tried it on a 2nd PC … same message.

I tried to contact Linsys support on a 3G enabled PDA … hoping for a phone number, but only found a pretty unhelpful interactive multi-choice Q & A session.

To cut a long and tedious story short, I had to reconnect old faithful in order to get a proper look at the Linksys support site where after a bit of digging I found a real person (re an interactive IM session) … once on and having explained the problem I was given instructions on how to connect manually … so … old faithful comes off again, Linksys plumbed in one more time and after about 20 mins or so I had a connection … I then had to manually set up the wireless connections (3 more plus a printer, PDA and phone).

All seems to to working now, but I have stripped off the Network Magic software on all but the ethernet connected PC as I did experience some conflict between it and the Microsoft Network Connection software.

Re Network Magic, I do quite like the network map images and the fact that you get a little message when another connection is made … so not all bad.

The other very minor niggles are down to the length of the telephone lead … about half a metre too short … and the ethernet cable is sub 2 metres too … and I’m not a fan of shiny black … great for showing off finger prints.

I quite like the slim low profile look of the router and the indicator graphics are pretty clear too … the other thing I liked over my old Belkin is a proper on/off button …

If the WAG120N behaves itself over the next month or so, I may re-visit my rating,

One last thing, I asked the guy at Linksys if there was a problem with the install CD … I got a corporate ‘maybe’ so it will be interesting to see if my problems were a one off!!!

Sorry to say purchasing this item was an awful experience.

I previously had a Netgear g-wireless router and decided to “upgrade” to an n-wireless one to benefit from better signal, and, more importantly, range. So I bought this and a Cisco n-wireless client adaptor for my PC. I chose Cisco as we have Cisco industrial-strength kit at work so thought I’d go for what I thought is the best in its field. Boy, was I wrong.

Signal strength has gone from 4 bars on my g-wireless to 1-2 on this and the router is just 4 metres away in the next room. Only when I place the router adjacent to the PC do I get a full 5-bar signal. The ports don’t work either. Got the latest firmware but no good. Changed the wireless settings to those recommended on various websites to no avail. Researched elsewhere on the web and found the WAG120N is notorious for poor signal range and strength so I’ve bought a known dud.

Ironic that I can see 4 other wireless networks throughout the neighbourhood at 2-3 bars but I can’t get a decent signal off a Cisco n-wireless modem router in the next room in my own home! I’ve spent over 30 years in IT and have never seen an alleged advancement in technology actually be such a significant jump back.

Amazon’s outstanding returns service invoked to see the back of it.
